1st AMRASE INTERNATIONAL AEROSPACE RESEARCH CONFERENCE
DECEMBER 8, 2007
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

The 1st AMRASE International Aerospace Research Conference held on December 8, 2007 was a great success. During the conference, several renowned professionals shared their expertise with more than 200 people, in the following fields:

Petrônio Noronha from INPE (National Institute of Space Research) talked about the Brazilian space program. He talked about the various research programs of the institution, the current status of the brazilian participation in the International Space Station (ISS) and about the construction of brazilian satellites and the benefits of space technology to the brazilian people.

Nivaldo Hinckel, one of the greatest space propulsion brazilian specialists, also from INPE, talked about different types of rocket engines, types of combustibles, whether solid or liquid, and all other alternatives. He also showed various graphs where estimations of the necessary power to take men to the moon and to mars were analyzed.

Robert Bruninga (WB4APR), the inventor of APRS (Automatic Positioning Report System) was the highlight of this event. He demonstrated the power of the APRS system and also in low-cost amateur radio space education project. During his lecture, he mounted an amateur radio station to operate a amateur satellite prototype. He used commands from his laptop computer to demonstrate how to control the torque and attitude of this kind of device in space.

Bruninga also visited a school in Rio de Janeiro, where he did a demonstration about magnetorque and reaction wheel devices using APRS system. In photo shown left, we can see AMRASE Educational Manager, Mary de Sá, and two students paying attention to Bruninga explanation.

Tadeu Fernandes, AMRASE President, talked about GPS and how it works. He also showed the difference between models with portable receptors and those certified for instrument flight (IFR - Instrument Flight Rules). He showed a summary of how GPS augmentation system is currently being implemented in Brazil and in other parts of the world. He also emphasized the importance for GPS training by the pilots to increase the flight safety during the landing procedures.

Edson Chaves (ICAO) left the audience at awe with his professional flight simulator presentation. He was able to show clearly how important, expensive, and complex it is to train a pilot. He showed several different types of simulators, from the simplest one to the most sophisticated models, such as used in Boieng 737, 747 and 777, amongst others.

Astronaut Marcos Pontes (NASA) talked about the brazilian space mission that celebrated 100 years since Santos Dumont flew his 14-BIS airplane (Centenario Mission). He also explained several interesting details of his training as an astronaut at NASA and in Russia. He described the dangers involved in space flights.

Pontes highlighted the importance of the International Educational Program ARISS (Amateur Radio and International Space Station). He showed a video when he was in space and he was talking via amateur radio to different people around the world. He said he was really happy when he heard portuguese speaking during his radio contacts over Brazil.

After his lecture, Marcos handed out the ARISS participation certificates to students of the American School of Rio de Janeiro (EARJ). This was the third ARISS contact with Brazil. This NASA educational program is supported in Brazil by AMRASE. To know more, click here
